To celebrate the release of their debut EP And… Beyond, alternative-psych band Melotone have now shared the stunning new video for suave new single Running Cold, out nowvia Think Twice Records. Talking about the single, frontman Alec Madeley says, “plucked from a place of fruitless infatuation, Running Cold unpicks the fragility of seeking refuge in romantic memories. Lyrically, the song centres on how we can quite easily distort the genuineness of these memories for our own comfort.”

Drawing inspiration from sixties psychedelia, specifically the Tropicalia movement, Melotone are a band more interested in texture and ambience than ego. The EP continues the band’s exploration of Brazilian soundscapes – the native country of singer Alec Madeley – whilst reconciling their humble beginnings in the Black Country, where the band grew up and met each other. Lyrically and musically, the EP faces questions of identity and of being in the unknown, but creating purpose in this space. It represents Melotone’s journey across the music of their homelands as they mould a sound entirely recognisable as their own. Sometimes drifting into the realms of folk, jazz, and soul, Melotone channel instrumental pioneers Khurangbin and Kikagaku Moyu with vocals that resemble the arresting style of singers Jeff Buckley and Brittany Howard, and at times the spirit of Portuguese-English singing Caetano Veloso.

Talking about the EP, guitarist Pete Carey elaborates, “I think Alec’s lyrics and our direction as band tie together to tell a story about how we don’t know exactly what we are or what our music means, but the unknowingness forms our identity. For example, Alec wrote ‘And… Beyond’ about returning to Brazil and how much had changed since his younger memories, and ‘Ceilings’ about how despite trying to write happy lyrics, often everything that comes out lyrically is melancholic and slightly sad. Both of these songs are about confronting the unknown, which is also something we’ve done as a band… not knowing what genre we are, what scene we’re in, which artists we’re most similar to, and yet recognising that our music is fully formed and has a place somewhere among the blurred lines. For us, And… Beyond is the discovery of that place.”

Melotone are Alec (vocals), Pete (guitar, vocals), Ant Nicklin (bass) and Ed Pearson (drums). They are originally from the Black Country but now reside in Bristol, after forming as a band in 2019. They have already received praise from BBC6 Music’s Jamz Supernova – who also featured them as a First Look for 2023 on Selector Radio – as well as Fred Perry Subculture, Metal Magazine and Crack Magazine amongst others. Melotone have previously supported the likes of Phil Madeley, Trueman & The Indoor League, Sylvie and Anna St Louis amongst others. They have also recently performed at OuterTown Festival and Sofar Sounds Bristol. Now signed to Think Twice Records, the quartet are excited to introduce listeners further to their unique alt-psych sound and the captivating atmosphere of their art.
