Review – Miya The Sun & Nebula Sun

Vookoo at Old Market Assembly, 23rd September

Miya The Sun

“Miya The Sun” has long been a band we’ve eagerly sought to feature, and thanks to @vookoo_bristol, our wish was finally granted last Saturday. This vibrant collective hails from Bristol, bringing together a musical prowess embodied by Chalky (Drummer/Singer), Will (Guitarist), Louis (Bass Player), and Poppy (Singer). Over a considerable period, they’ve become a mainstay in the local music scene, leaving an indelible mark with their unique fusion of hard-hitting funk instrumentals, rap, and velvety ballads, captivating the audiences fortunate enough to witness them live.

Their reputation for delivering high-energy, welcoming performances precedes them, filling The Old Market Assembly’s floor and balcony to capacity came as no surprise. Throughout the set, the flavors abound, allowing the audience to revel in the band’s infectious energy. Be it the dynamic “Freak 2 The Beat,” the heartfelt homage to their roots in “Bristol Dream,” or the catchy tune “All About You” (a track that keeps resonating in our minds even 48 hours later), Miya The Sun pours forth a veritable torrent of musical sunshine.

Watching them perform on a damp and dark night felt akin to a vital dose of vitamin D. Their music swiftly coursed through the soul, inducing an irrepressible urge to set one’s feet in motion. Despite already having unveiled their debut EP last year, the band is diligently working on their inaugural album. In the meantime, we strongly encourage you to experience Miya The Sun at their brightest—live and in person.

Nebula Sun

Nebulas, those celestial wonders, are a spectacle of cosmic artistry, displaying a rich palette of hues across the vast cosmos. In this particular instance, a brilliant shade of red painted the celestial canvas. While this vibrant color presented a daunting challenge to the photographers in the crowd, it cast a mesmerizing and evocative atmosphere for the funky family that constitutes Norwich’s Nebula Sun.

Their music is a mesmerizing fusion—a swirling amalgamation of progressive grooves, pulsating rhythms, and the fluidity of jazz. This auditory journey transcended the ordinary, guiding the audience on a psychedelic trip through the dimensions of sound. Swift tempo shifts, double sax, and riffs from realms beyond intertwined to create a musical odyssey. Within this journey, Nebula Sun seized the expanses of time and space, utilizing them to craft their sonic experimentations. It provided them the breathing room for innovation and creativity in their musical repertoire. The blending of influences from various decades coalesced into a single, captivating Saturday night road trip. It was a voyage that whisked us past motels adorned with neon signs, proudly proclaiming genres like Prog Rock, Grunge, and Jazz.

As the mellifluous tunes fused seamlessly with the ambiance and the crowd, a collective consciousness began to form, akin to a dreamlike state. But then, just as dreams can swiftly shift, the set took an electrifying turn, propelling the audience into euphoria as the music found a rockier edge.

In the vastness of the cosmos, a nebula is a colossal cloud of dust and gas, existing between stars and nurturing the birth of new stars. Just like this cosmic phenomenon, Nebula Sun, too, has found its nurturing ground amidst recognition from esteemed platforms like BBC Introducing, Lopa Kothari, and BBC Radio 3’s In Tune. It’s as if we stand at the threshold, witnessing the birth of new stars in the musical firmament.
