Review – DMAs

Bristol Rough Trade, 2nd April

Aussie three-piece band DMA’s are not to be underestimated. Their acoustic performance at Rough Trade comes fresh off the release of their fourth studio album, ‘How Many Dreams?’, which debuted at No.3 on the UK midweek Album charts, looks set to become their highest-charting album so far. On a beautiful spring Sunday in Bristol, there was a buzz to them, a refreshing wave of excitement in the air for a band who deserves it more than anyone.

There really is nothing like an acoustic performance to showcase the raw talent and skill this band possesses; strip away all the noise and gimmicks, and you’ll find DMA’s are three incredible musicians on their own terms, with Tommy O’Dell’s distinctive vocals and Johnny Took and Matthew Mason on guitars. The audience were treated to a short but sweet setlist, only 8 songs in length however quality definitely trumps quantity in this instance. A stellar, passionate acoustic performance of some of the band’s fan favourites, including ‘Feels Like 37’ and a whole room sing-along for the outstanding ‘Silver’.

A setlist also equipped with brand-new indie summer anthems, just in time for that warm weather creeping through, we were treated to stand-out performances of ‘Everybody’s Saying Thursday’s The Weekend’, ‘Forever’ and ‘Fading Like A Picture’ among the setlist. Although short in length, everyone in attendance (myself included) were left wanting more – precisely what a record store show should leave those in attendance feeling. With their full headline tour kicking off very shortly after this intimate record store run, I’m sure tickets will be flying off the shelves.
