Review – UPSAHL

The Thekla – 21st November 2022

Quite simply one of the best shows of ‘22 from a name that is soon to be etched into the ether as a true global superstar.

Already a familiar name across TikTok, Arizona native Taylor Cameron Upsahl, known professionally as Upsahl (stylized as UPSAHL) is a whirlwind of a performer that encapsulates all that is good about the new socially aware, socially awkward, angst driven alt pop music scene.

Sitting somewhere between Pink & Yungblud, Upsahl has the drive, talent and songs to eventually eclipse them both.

Roaring on to stage to the deafenings screams of a largely, young, female identifying audience.. Upsahl launched into a full throttle set that is high impact, smash-mouth and insanely catchy.

It was near impossible to tell who was having more fun, the artist or the crowd.

Jumping around the stage like a hour long game of the floor is lava. Whilst delivering the catchy hooks, additive melody and barbed lyrics, packed with wit and cynicism that she has become so widely popular for.  It was easy to see the firm connection the young Gen Z artist has garnered with her ever growing legions of fans.

Its a winning formula, write about the sorta shit that twenty somethings all have to deal with in a open, frank and brutally honest way. And deliver it with vigour, energy and feeling.

The best artists are the honest and introspective ones. It allows a listener and a crowd to connect on a personal level with the artist. And Upsahl is firmly in that camp.

Songs such as “Lunatic”, “Shut Up” & “Drugs” have now been permanently tattooed into my brain since Monday evening.

When you wake up the morning after a gig and subconsciously go about your morning humming tracks from the previous nights gig, that is our yard stick for a memorable show.

Upsahl is a PHENOMENAL talent and feels very close to the cusp of global superstardom that is definitely deserved.
