Review – Downcast

The Crofters Rights, 6th May 2023

A slice of emo pop punk heaven.

A sold out crowd packed into the dark black cube that is Crofters can generate a pretty good atmosphere.

When coupled with four hometown heroes that atmosphere is amplified ten fold.

Striding onto stage to the sort of reception reserved for rock royalty Bristol based Downcast Couldn’t fail to hit the mark.

@liamdowncast is a natural front man. Delivering Downcasts heart bleeding lyrics in a authentic manner that forms connection after connection with those watching.

@downcast are certainly fire to watch, especially the high flying, high kicking, guitar swinging, mosh pit partaking antics of @jeffdowncast. When coupled with the stable beats laid down by @your_local_beat_bank & strings n things dynamics of @bendowncast (and a great vocal it has to be said) they certainly don’t look out of place headlining any stage.

The seven song set leans heavily into 2022’s debut album “I Saw Hell When I Was With You”.

Album and set serve up passion and poignancy in equal measure. Having been out a little over a year the crowd are familiar enough to join in where required and provide a atmosphere far larger than the Crofters confines should allow.

Band catching the eye with the intensity of emotion etched on their faces. And catching the heart with tracks such as “Mistakes That I Have Made” and “Sylvan View”

The best bands record relatable records. Downcast deliver that relatability and believability in spades.

By the time we get final track “Catharsis” the shackles have been well and truly thrown off of both crowd and band. Band and fans merge and the energy released is… well, a catharsis.

Downcast are fresh enough for the crowds of tomorrow with some great nostalgic nods to when emo was king.

Proud to have these guys flying the alt flag high for the Bristol scene.
