Review – Annie Hamilton

Bristol Rough Trade – 2nd August 2022

Small in stature, huge in aura …

The first thing you notice about Sydney’s Annie Hamilton is the warmth & charm of her personality. The instant like-ability provides a connection with those watching. Which in turn allows her to express herself effortlessly and naturally.

The grounded nature of her performance really resonates with those in attendance and they instantly open their hearts and minds to the messages Annie conveys in her music.

Carried along effortlessly through songs which twist & turn like a rollercoaster through complex tempo shifts, the crowd are already so captivated they ride that rollercoaster the whole way with her.

We are treated to half of debut album “The future is here, but it feels kinda like the past”. As well as an assortment of half a dozen other tracks.

Annie’s vocal shifts from wistful and dreamy to incredible demonstrations of raw power. That power for diversity and range is enthralling and provided the crowd with quite a few “wow” moments.

The middle of the set is incredibly strong as three absolute stand out tracks “Panic”, “again”, and “Whirlwind” hit the crowd back to back.

“Whirlwind” is my favourite track off the album, so to hear it sung so utterly perfectly live was… a truly, touching & special moment that in all honestly left me a little choked up.

And there laid bare is Annie’s gift. Her songs and the performance of them evokes a true emotional response in the listener that is priceless.

Watch this space world… Annie Hamilton is a name you’ll be hearing a lot more of.
