Live Review – TREP, Scarsun & Kill by Mouth

The Gryphon, Jan 28th 2022

goresgyniad y Cymry , no I’ve not fallen asleep & hit my head on the keyboard. It’s the only way to describe Fridays gig. Three absolute barn storming acts from the valleys of Wales swept to the stage for a raucous night of rock mayhem.

Kill by Mouth opened us up in grand fashion. The Trio bring a loud, raw sound with them. And the confines of the upstairs live music area gave us a sense of being invited into the garage of some mates that simply love to play metal. Speaking with them after the set. We find another band who’s world was flipped upside down by the pandemic. & are just a ball of enthusiasm, chomping at the bit to just get back to doing what they do best… making walls shake.

Scarsun

Desperate to catch Scarsun live for over a year, but our diaries never seemed to align.

The five piece Alt Rockers, led on vocals by Letha Curtis sound amazing on record, with a banging back catalogue of tunes such as “time” & “chains”. & we are stoked to report they sound even better live.

A strong set of 7 songs, that also included new release “In the night” were delivered with a polished stage presence packed with the epic riffs that are synonymous with the band.

The cramped space barely wide enough to contain Letha (vocals), Jim (Bass), Matt (Guitar), Aaron (Guitar) & Nathan (Drums). The combination of solid, tight band with a dynamic vocalist at home on a bigger stage is a match made in heaven (or wales to be precise) & the good size crowd enjoyed every second of it. It’s been a long wait, but our expectations were first met & then exceeded.

TREP

Another new name to me, but not to the wider metal community. A solid band full of power chords, power vocals and power stances.

TREP blend heavy rock together with prog & metal seamlessly. What you don’t realise when you buy a ticket is you’re in for a night of comedy gold, the bands crowd interaction & banter is superb. They are infectious in both sound & stage presence. Vocalist Raycz with incredible raw power that harks back to the glory days of rock. TREP wouldn’t be out of place on stage at any metal festival.

The added dimension of Raycz taking on the main vocal duties has given the band fresh impetus. And added a fuel to a fire set to burn bright.

Trep are one of those bands that once seen live have you immediately pulling out your phone to add them to your Spotify play list. Indeed they were played loud all the way home from the gig.
