This Glasgow-based band popped up on a recommended artist list just a week before I realised they’d be heading down south to play The Lanes, Bristol. Having had them on repeat all week, it only made sense to check them out live—and I’m so glad I did.

Spyres formed in 2019, made up of vocalist/guitarists Keira Mcguire and Emily Downie, bassist Jude Curran and drummer Alex White. Their unique blend of pop, rock and punk quickly got them noticed, landing them support slots with Nothing But Thieves, Soft Cult, and The Jesus and Mary Chain—all while navigating a global pandemic.

Tonight’s show had the added bonus of a killer support act: Hunny Buzz, another band from my recommended list. Their super-catchy tunes were the perfect warm-up for the night’s main event.

Spyres kicked off with an early anthem, ‘Fake ID’, before launching into the 90s chart-worthy ‘Lost Without You’. Straight away, it was clear the dual vocals of Keira and Emily are no studio trick—distinct, flawless, and perfectly matched, like bread and butter.

With two EPs and several singles under their belt, we were treated to a near-complete run-through of their discography. Every track landed, every lyric shouted back by the crowd.

Highlights included ‘Money’, ‘I Don’t Care’, ‘Honestly’, ‘Sleep Forever’, and their latest release, ‘Fun’. As the set neared its end, they dropped two of my personal favourites—‘The Thing’ and ‘Otherside’—sparking the first crowd-surfing I’ve ever seen at this venue.

If these songs are anything to go by, Spyres are shaping the future of UK rock—and if that’s the case, I’m all in.

We first encountered Brooke Combe at The Louisiana in 2022—a raw, magnetic talent who left little doubt that Scotland was nurturing its next great voice. Fast forward to April 2025 and a huge crowd at Bristol’s Thekla, where Combe headlines in support of her acclaimed debut album, Dancing At The Edge Of The World. Early predictions of her star potential now feel like prophecy fulfilled.

Driven and self-assured, Combe parted ways with Island Records in pursuit of creative freedom. Teaming up with The Coral’s James Skelly, she delivered a debut praised for its blend of vintage soul and modern R&B. Tracks like “This Town,” “L.M.T.F.A.,” and “Butterfly” pulse with emotional depth, with contributions from Danny Murphy, Charlie Salt, and string arrangements by Sean O’Hagan.

Tonight’s set, part of a UK headline tour, includes 10 of the album’s 11 tracks, alongside the songs that earned her slots at Glastonbury and more. From opener “This Town,” the crowd is fully engaged, singing every word and lighting up the room with their energy.

Combe proves her musical range early, switching between tambourine and guitar with ease. At 23, her stage presence is magnetic, her between-song banter sharp and funny. Her intro to “L.M.T.F.A.”—inspired not by heartbreak but her stepmother—has the crowd in stitches.

A soulful cover of “Summer Breeze” briefly slows the tempo, before the powerful one-two of “Angie Stone” and “Butterfly” closes the main set. Her encore—featuring fan favourite “Are You With Me Honey” and title track “Dancing At The Edge Of The World”—sends the venue into midweek party mode.

Brooke Combe is the real deal: a soul powerhouse with pub-ready wit. Long may she reign.

As the frontman of Years & Years, Olly Alexander has made his mark—but Polari, his solo tour, is something else entirely. It’s bold, emotional, and deeply personal.

Before Olly even appeared, the voice of Ian McKellen filled the venue, reciting phrases in Polari—the secret language once used by gay men in the ’50s and ’60s. The crowd buzzed with anticipation.

The moment Olly stepped on stage, the room erupted. The stage was an art piece in itself—neon lights, dreamlike visuals, and futuristic styling blended seamlessly with Olly’s emotive sound. This wasn’t just a show; it was a fully immersive experience into his world of identity, love, and self-expression.

Olly is magnetic. His stage presence is effortlessly captivating, and his vocals—rich, powerful, and vulnerable—held the audience spellbound. The setlist was a stunning mix of Polari tracks, acoustic moments, Years & Years hits, and fan favourites, each performed with infectious energy.

He used the stage to create a space of inclusivity and joy, encouraging the crowd to dance, sing, and be unapologetically themselves. His words between songs, filled with LGBTQ+ pride and self-love, resonated deeply.

Highlights included a moving acoustic version of “Language,” dedicated to his mum—who was in the audience. His vulnerability turned the room silent, full of shared emotion and quiet connection.

The night was more than a concert. It was a celebration of queer identity, love, and unity. Polari is a movement—one that invites everyone to embrace who they are and find freedom in the music.
