Bristol’s SWX hosted an unforgettable performance by local favorite Katy J Pearson on Friday, the 29th of November. Having moved to Bristol from Cirencester, Pearson’s bond with the city runs deep, and her return to SWX was particularly special. The packed venue, holding roughly 1,100 fans, reflected her immense connection to the city.

Currently on tour promoting her third album, Someday, Now (released September 2024), Pearson has captivated audiences across the UK and Europe. The album explores restlessness, dissatisfaction, and introspection, inspired by her travels. Tracks like “Save Me” and “Siren Song” delve into vulnerability, while “It’s Mine Now” reflects self-assertion and growth.

Opening the night with the album’s title track, Pearson immediately captivated the audience with her enchanting vocals. The set, featuring hits like “Those Goodbyes” and “Beautiful Soul,” showcased her blend of indie pop and country influences. Accompanied by her band, she delivered a heartfelt and polished performance.

Her engaging crowd interaction added warmth to the evening. Reflecting on once applying for a job at SWX, she celebrated the irony of now headlining there. A fan’s booming “WE LOVE YOU, KATY!” drew cheers, highlighting her bond with the audience.

Closing the main set with “The Radio,” she returned for an encore including “Return” and “Sky.” Stunning lighting and smoke effects enhanced the atmosphere, creating a mesmerizing experience.

The night kicked off with an exhilarating opening set from Troy Redfern and his drummer, Nicky Waters. The duo had undeniable chemistry, effortlessly following each other’s lead as they tore through a selection of gritty, high-energy blues tracks. Troy’s stage presence, a mix of Captain Jack Sparrow’s swagger and a Guitar Hero character’s skill, was captivating. A standout moment was their performance of “Waiting For Your Love,” featuring an extended guitar solo that created an incredible atmosphere. It was hard to believe such a full, rich sound was coming from just two musicians.
Then it was time for Philip Sayce and his accompanying bassist and drummer. The band strutted on stage with confidence and wasted no time, launching straight into their first track. From that moment, it was an all-out assault of rock and roll for nearly two hours. Sayce’s face-melting guitar solos, paired with his smooth, soulful vocals, dominated every song. He gave it his all, showcasing jaw-dropping skills that included playing his guitar with his teeth and turning one of The Fleece’s iconic pillars into an impromptu guitar slide.
Even during slower blues numbers, Sayce’s performance was mesmerizing, as if he were channeling the spirit of Stevie Ray Vaughan. At times, he seemed to emerge from a trance when a song ended, visibly consumed by the music.
During a brief pause, Sayce shared a personal connection with the audience, mentioning that he was born in Aberystwyth before moving to Canada as a child. He even speculated that he might have family in the Bristol area, which made this gig feel especially meaningful for him.
The show ended on a high note with a raw and energetic rendition of John Lee Hooker’s “This Is Hip.” In true rockstar fashion, Sayce kicked a stray metal fan across the stage and restrained himself from smashing his guitar—though the adrenaline in the room made it feel like he just might.
What a performance! Philip Sayce isn’t just a guitarist; he’s a force of nature. I’ve never seen anyone play guitar quite like that.

Australian duo, Royel Madden and Otis Pavlovic, are currently on the last leg of their US, European and UK travels. The pair, who went viral (twice!) for covering the well-loved Sophie Ellis-Bextor song “Murder on the Dancefloor” and “Linger” by the Cranberries, opted to leave the balmy and familiar Aussie temperatures, for the cooler, rainier settings of the UK and made Bristol a stop on their sold-out tour.

The duo released their debut studio album in February of this year and it is hard to believe that this is just the beginning for them. Their co-written songs have feel-good melodies, that flirt with the lazy days, surf and skate lifestyle, and oozy Australian charm.

I instinctively knew the Bristol gig would be special. Due to high demand for extra capacity, the gig was moved from The Trinity Centre to The Marble Factory, which sold out almost immediately. It was packed, you couldn’t move! I even had trouble getting to the photo pit. The show started with some of their most upbeat songs, engaging everyone from the onset. “Heading For The Door,” “Adored,” and “Daisy Chain” set the mood and it was great to see how many people sang along, word for word. The stage set-up was mighty impressive; hazy smoke machines, bold lights and a giant shrimp. The guys laidback style complimented their music perfectly. It felt like watching friends jam out, enjoying every minute of making music together.

The interaction with the audience was casual and cool, like greeting old friends while simultaneously making new ones.Members of the band exchanged glances regularly, checking in and riffing off one another without speaking directly to each other.
Royel Otis regularly appears on my Spotify, on the radio, on YouTube, and on Instagram. The band continues to grow from strength to strength, never losing their edge, their unique sense of being a band in this fast-paced, all-consuming music industry. There will be big things ahead for this band

The Wailers Bring Their UK Tour to a Triumphant Close in Bristol

The Wailers wrapped up their UK tour in style at the O2 Academy Bristol on Monday, November 25th, delivering an unforgettable finale.

The night began with the fantastic Beatles Dub Club, featuring DJ Chris Arnold and his Dub Club Horn section. Their set offered a unique fusion of Beatles remixes, reggae covers, and even a drum and bass rendition of “She Loves You.” The innovative mashups had the audience buzzing, setting a lively tone for the night. Opening concerts with DJ sets like this is a brilliant idea—I’d love to see more shows embrace it!

Then, the main act took the stage. Lead singer Mitchell Brunings burst on with electrifying energy, immediately capturing the crowd’s attention by shouting, “Are you feeling irie?!” From that moment on, The Wailers skillfully honored the legacy of Bob Marley and the original lineup, delivering a setlist packed with timeless classics.

One standout moment was their performance of “One Love.” By this point, I had joined the crowd, who sang along in unison—a room full of Bristolians harmonizing to this iconic anthem. It was a magical, communal experience and easily one of my top gig moments of the year.
