Review – The Wonderstuff

Bristol O2 Academy 10th June 2022

Nostalgia in bucket loads…

The Wonderstuff provided a backdrop to many of the happiest moments of my early teenage years. So hearing they’d be not only playing in Bristol, but playing iconic third album “Never Loved Elvis” in full meant there was simply nowhere I’d rather have been last Friday.

Although only front man Miles Hunt on guitar / vocals & Malcolm Treece on guitar survive from the original line up, long standing fiddle player Erica Nockalls, Mark Gemini-Thwaite on guitar, Tim Sewell on bass & Pete Howard on drums complete an accomplished line up that delivered a performance of one of the UK’s most iconic indie albums to an absolute T.

My friend accompanying me tapping me on the shoulder to remark “it’s perfect”.

And judging by the floor full of huge smiles & bouncing bodies he wasn’t the only one to think so.

The set, split into two halves delivered outstanding renditions of classics “The Size Of A Cow’, ‘Welcome To The Cheap Seats’ ‘Caught In My Shadow’ for part one. Before a second half of utter bonkers boisterousness as the band delved deep into a 36 year back catalogue.

If you could have bottled the happiness in that packed room at the end, you’d make a fortune.

And the best bit was seeing Miles & the band get a real kick out of the reaction of the crowd as well.

What a fantastic night.
