Review – The Raven Age

Bristol O2 Academy, 27th June 2022

Coincidentally the last time we caught The Raven Age they were also on the same bill as @hawxxmusic, albeit in the confines of The Exchange.

This time they both took to the much larger stage at Bristol’s O2 in support of @tremontiofficial , the history between TRA & Tremonti stretching back almost a decade makes this a perfect fit.

And anyone who has seen The Raven Age at a large festival or Arena will know what I mean by saying the bigger the stage, the bigger the performance from the metal bred 5 piece.

The individual members seem much more at home when they are able to wander the full length of larger surroundings. And if offers up so interesting guitar duels and dynamic shifts as the set progresses.

The band are natural merchants of noise, playing fast, loose and loud is literally in their DNA. And Monday night was no different, from opening track “The Day The World Stood Still” (from 2019s, Conspiracy) the band set about rattling bones are blistering paint off the walls.

No matter how many times I’ve seen The Raven Age I’m constantly in awe of just how much they pour into each performance.

I manage to stabilise myself on the bass shaking, upper floor of the venue to watch Matt James deliver another ridiculous performance. Wielding the mic stand as well as the rest of the band wield their guitars.

The addition of Tommy Gentry on guitar has added a much more authentic and dirty metal edge. And the band produce one of my favourite performances to date.

The seven song set sounds short, but when you consider the cinematic length of some of the bands songs there was more than enough to enjoy here.

The Raven Age are a big time band, packed full of powerful harmonies and heavy riffs. And the deep darkness of sound they embrace, that seems ripped from the soundtracks of the best Hollywood fantasy world films, only seems to get better the further their story progresses.

Brilliant performance
