Review – The Bare Souls w/ Horning Glory

Mr Wolfs, Saturday 6th November 2021

Horning Glory

Never in the field of live music, has so much brass, been packed into such a small space…

What Horning Glory lacked for in space they certainly made up for in skill, musicianship and charm. Transforming Mr Wolfs for a brief moment to a bar anywhere in New Orleans.

From original songs to covers of Estelle’s “American Boy” & Destiny’s Child’s “Independent Women” the five piece set the tone for a party vibe. Feet were tapping, legs were dancing, voices were singing. A feel good band that were playful with the crowd. And from the smiles on their faces, just look like they love to play, anywhere, anytime.

The Bare Souls

More than two years ago The Bare Souls were one of the first bands we ever covered at the gig guide. In many ways their performance, as we watched them do their thing at the Canteen, kick started this whole project.

Live music is great, but when it’s performed by people as talented as this bunch it ceases to become something you enjoy. & becomes something you feel instead.

In the two difficult years that have passed I’m glad to see nothing has changed. TBSB remain one of the best bands of their genre across the entire south west of England. What genre is that? Well, their blend of Southern blues, soul, jazz and funk puts them in many camps. & there in lays their wide appeal. We defy anyone, of any musical genre bias,  to watch lead vocalist Florence Pardoe channelling Etta James and not come away gobsmacked that they’ve not come across this band before.

The Bare Souls are a staple of the local music & festival scene, but whilst that familiarity and feeling is great, surely this band is destined for bigger stages. It would be a musical travesty if The Bare Souls are not packing out large venues up & down the country within the next few years.

In terms of Saturday nights set, the tightly packed & intimate setting of Mr Wolfs only added to the atmosphere the band generates. Whirling through a extensive set of 12 songs, including personal favs “This City”, “disengage” & “dopamine” the band had the venue grooving, dancing and singing along.

Pushing to the back of the room it was clear that every last position in the venue where someone might grab a view of the stage was taken. And the rapturous roar that greeted the end of the set was testament to the superb night every in attendance had all enjoyed.

If you love and appreciate live music, regardless of your preferred genre, The Bare Souls are a MUST SEE LIVE part of the Bristol music scene.
