Review – The Amazons

Bristol Rough Trade – September 14th 2022

Reading based indie rock band The Amazons visited Roughtrade, Bristol to promote their newest album ‘How Will I know if Heaven will Find me?’ Playing a stripped back acoustic set, the band was wistful and their stage presents was engaging and contagious.

Of course, Bristol crowds did not disappoint. This album was only released 6 days ago, yet a chorus of voices filled the room like beautiful school choir, to the bands surprise, when they played the sentimental ballad “Northern Star” Front person Matt Thomson expressed so much gratitude for the crowd, and was elated as the new album had reached number 5 in the album charts this week.

The Amazons are definitely renowned for their memorable riffs and sing-along anthems. Their most famous being either “Black Magic” and “Junk Food Forever.” Both of which were added to the end of the short yet sweet setlist. These older melodies were very well received, leaving the room  buzzing with an ensemble of voices and enthusiasm.

These Roughtrade signing sessions are becoming a regular favourite of mine. They are a wonderful way to hear your favourite bands stripped back, they are intimate and charming. This gig was all of the above, and it re-sparked my love for this band’s music.
