Review Stella Donnelly

Motion Bristol 25/5/22

Well this was quite impressive!

Versatility in tempo, performance and instrument has left us wondering if there is anything that Western Australian Indie folk songstress Stella Donnelly can’t do?

Such an incredibly strong act as a support for Rolling Blackouts coastal Fever that in many ways it felt as though it was a duel headliner. Indeed Stella was to later join the boys on stage during their set as well.

Stella really used the occasion to showcase her full repertoire, be that singing acoustically, with full band, on the guitar, on the keys or the harmonica. And we’ve not even mentioned the  cirque du soleil dance routines.

The 8 song set flew by, with the crowd as packed for Stella as they were for the headliner. 8 tracks such as “U Owe Me”, “Flood” and “Lungs” interspersed with a lovely, positive interaction that charmed the crowd. Stella’s politics were never far away as she charged the crowd with various poignant remonstrations of the state of the world. It is indeed activism that is laced through her music. The flip side being how much fun Stella is too watch perform.

Finishing up with the infectious “How Was Your Day” & “Tricks” was enough to ensure Stella a large crowd when she returns to Bristol in November to play @theklabris
