Review – Sprints

Strange Brew Bristol, March 1st 2022

Dublin based, garage noise making machine Sprints arrived in Bristol on Monday night to play Strange Brew.

Our first visit to one of the city’s newest art & music venues, and have to say we were impressed.

Sprints brought along the big guns in terms of local support with home town five piece @saloon_dion
A busy yet, initially stiff crowd were going to take some warming up, but the Salooners were up for the challenge. Hitting the crowd with their unique brand of brash, not-give-a-fuckery. These guys were recommended to me by a friend a while ago and didn’t disappoint. Look forward to covering them again.

Vocalist Karla, leads the latest, high end , Irish export  onto stage in a city that’s already taken Fontaines DC & Thumper to its hearts.

Sprints earned their rep by playing high energy, live shows and tonight is no different. You will have a good time at a Sprints show, even if Karla has to come off stage and slap some of her full on energy into you. Sprints combine guitar-driven hooks, motoric rhythm and emotive lyricism to create a unique sound that pulls from garage, grunge, punk and beyond. And on top of that, they seem like the sort of people you’d love to have a bloody good drinking session with.

Only 1/3 into the set and the floor of StrangeBrew is alive with stomping feet, hollering voices & broad smiles. Is melodic punk a thing? I think it could be. This is a real band, singing about real shit, in a authentic way. Songs like “Modern life”, “Manifesto” & “How does the story go” really set the stall out for this band. And it’s so refreshing to hear a vocalist sing with glorious shades of regional accent shining through. None of that trying to sound American BS.

Sprints finish with an encore cover of Wet Legs ‘Chaise Longue’ to send a crowd home happy with all boxes ticked for a cracking gig.
