Review – Skarlett Riot, The Exchange, 2nd February

Northern melodic metal titans Skarlett Riot stormed into Bristol’s Exchange on Sunday night, marking the halfway point of their UK tour in support of their latest album, Caelestia. With a reputation for delivering high-energy, emotionally charged performances, the four-piece arrived in peak form—refreshed, fired up, and ready to bring their latest material to life.

From the outset, the atmosphere inside the intimate venue was electric. Fans packed tightly against the stage, eager to witness a band that has remained at the forefront of the UK’s hard rock and melodic metal scene since the release of their 2013 debut, Tear Me Down. Skarlett Riot’s ability to seamlessly blend modern metal with hard rock—marked by soaring choruses, razor-sharp riffs, and Chloe “Skarlett” Drinkwater’s commanding vocals—has kept them fresh and relevant for over a decade. Live, their evolution as a band is unmistakable, with Caelestia showcasing a refined but unmistakably raw intensity that translates seamlessly to the stage.

Drawing influence from acts such as Motionless In White, Papa Roach, and Lacuna Coil, Skarlett Riot expertly balance aggression with melody. Their dynamic interplay between Chloe’s clean vocals and Danny’s harsh growls adds depth and dimension, enhancing the impact of each track.

On record, Skarlett Riot deliver anthems of catharsis—songs that channel frustration, resilience, and empowerment. But live, they transcend, fostering an undeniable connection with the crowd. From the first note, the energy was palpable. The band’s cohesion was razor-tight, each member locked in as Luke’s relentless drumming and Martin’s thunderous bass lines provided a rock-solid foundation for their crushing yet melodic sound.

At the helm, Chloe exudes charisma, commanding the stage with effortless charm. Smiling between soaring vocal lines, she interacts with the front row, exchanging fist bumps and locking eyes with fans who hang on every word. Her delivery is impeccable, proving why she is fast becoming one of the UK’s most compelling voices in the genre.

The setlist was, unsurprisingly, weighted toward Caelestia, but the band ensured that longtime fans were well catered for. From the atmospheric intensity of 2017’s Break to the euphoric glow of their 2024 single Luminate, the set was a masterclass in pacing, blending light and shade while keeping the momentum relentless.

As the night drew to a close, the sense of unity in the room was undeniable—proof that Skarlett Riot’s music resonates deeply with their audience. Fortunately for Bristol, the wait for their next dose of the band’s incendiary live show won’t be long. Skarlett Riot are set to return in November, supporting Lord of the Lost on their highly anticipated UK and Ireland tour. If Sunday night was any indication, that show is not to be missed.
