The Marble Factory, March 13th
Its almost 24 hours on. I have yet to stop grinning, I have yet to take Self Esteem off loop as I try to prolong the memory of last night.
If you could have bottled the positivity inside Bristol’s Marble Factory, shook it up & sprayed it over people it would make the world a better place.
The fact that this tour date has been sold out months in advance is both testament to the elevation of Rebecca Lucy Taylor to genuine superstar. And her genuine like-ability, still coming across as grounded, level headed and a normal lass who just happens to have a massive talent.
Marble Factory couldn’t have been a better venue for Self Esteem’s soaring, singalong anthems. The best sound system in the city coming into its own as “Prioritise Pleasure” & “Fucking Wizardy” rang out, soaring into the rafters as 1600 smiling faces held their arms aloft.
Her brand of honest, realism and self worth/self love music spreading through the crowd like a tsunami of feel good energy.
Rebecca isn’t however alone on the stage. Those who have seen her perform before will know the show is very much a team effort. Her sisters in arms on blistering bass and dancing partners / backing vocalists perform some of the best choreographed routines I have seen on a Bristol stage. Its simply flawless. And a shout out to her drummer, dryly introduced as the token man. The comradery of the performers matched by the vociferous crowd.
The set was everything you could want and more. 13 pitch perfect songs and 3 encore tracks delivered with huge smiles, only beaten by those of us watching.
The stripped back performance of “John Elton” is something that will stay with me for a very, very long time. Just Self Esteem, raw, honest, lipstick smeared face, guitar, spotlight & a room so quiet you could hear a pin drop. Before bursting back into colour & positivity with the end of the set. The live delivery of two new tracks “Mother” & “Love Second” the Shirley Bassey dance / walk off stage..
If anybody in that crowd had a tough day / tough week Self Esteem delivered the perfect remedy.
Smile, be strong, love yourself.
