Though winter’s chill still lingers, Roses are already in full bloom, radiating a warmth that feels almost out of season.
This Bristol-based quintet has been generating significant buzz, making their first gig of 2025 a must-attend event. The band—Emily (vocals), Reece (lead guitar), Megan (rhythm guitar, vocals), Joe (bass), and Sean (drums)—formed 18 months ago, a fresh product of BIMM’s prolific talent pipeline. Despite graduation, Bristol remains their creative nexus, with the band convening regularly to rehearse and perform.
Drawing a crowd out of their post-holiday hibernation is no small feat, but Roses managed it with ease. The near-capacity audience at Bristol’s iconic venue was testament to the mounting anticipation. From the moment Emily and Megan led the charge with the rousing opener “Paralysed,” it was clear why this band is causing a stir. Their stage presence exuded an assured charisma, belying their relative inexperience. With under twenty gigs to their name, their polished sound and cohesive performance were strikingly mature.
Musically, Roses weave together punchy punk-inflected drumming, intricate basslines, and shimmering lead guitar work, delivering a sound that is both immediate and refined. Emily’s dynamic stage presence—a captivating mix of playful charm and commanding power—anchors the band, drawing the audience into their world effortlessly.
Their rising star status, bolstered by BBC Introducing’s enthusiastic support of their debut single “Whiplash,” suggests a trajectory that could see them become a mainstay on the airwaves. Their sound is a compelling blend of influences: the raw emotional candor of Olivia Rodrigo, the rebellious spirit of Avril Lavigne, and the theatrical flair of The Last Dinner Party. Together, these elements create a poignant, bittersweet narrative of youth, growth, and resilience.
The ten tracks, which included the debut and an outstanding cover of Chappell Roan’s “Good Luck, Babe!”, more than justified the hype and left us feeling we might just have seen something a little special. Definitely ones to watch in 2025.
