Review – Phoenix Lake, The Exchange, February 2nd

Since their formation in 2018, Nottingham’s Phoenix Lake has been carving out a formidable presence in the UK’s melodic metal scene. Led by the commanding vocals of Lana Phillis and backed by the dynamic guitar work of Ash Wilson and Zak Smith, with Joe Synnott driving the rhythm on drums, the band has cultivated a sound that bridges the gap between metalcore aggression and soaring melodic harmonies. Drawing comparisons to Paramore, Parkway Drive, and Evanescence, their signature blend of power and emotion is fast earning them a dedicated following.

Their debut EP, Beyond The Flames (June 2023), made an immediate impact with its polished production and compelling songwriting. Tracks like “Come Alive” and “Faithless” showcase a seamless fusion of intricate guitar work and captivating vocal melodies, delivering a modern yet fierce take on melodic metal. The EP’s success was further cemented when the band won Planet Rock’s prestigious competition, securing them a prime slot opening the Sophie Lancaster Stage at Bloodstock Festival 2023.

Momentum continued into 2024, with Phoenix Lake taking the stage at major festivals, including Maid of Stone, where they shared the bill with heavyweights such as Wolfmother, Mr. Big, and The Warning. These high-profile appearances further established their reputation as a must-see live act.

2025 has already kicked off at full throttle, with the band supporting their longtime friends Skarlett Riot on an electrifying eight-date UK tour. Simultaneously, they’ve been hard at work in the studio, crafting their highly anticipated debut concept album—a release set to define their artistic evolution and cement their place in the modern metal landscape.

Catching Phoenix Lake live at The Exchange in Bristol was nothing short of a pleasure. From the moment they took the stage, the camaraderie between band members was undeniable, creating an instant connection with the crowd. Showmanship was in no short supply—each member had their moment to shine, both individually and collectively, proving that they are more than the sum of their influences. While Within Temptation may be a fair reference point, Phoenix Lake is rapidly forging their own path, pushing the boundaries of sound and performance to establish a legacy all their own.

With an unrelenting drive and a rapidly growing list of accolades and if Phoenix Lake’s trajectory so far is any indication, the future of melodic metal has a new name to watch.
