Review – Jake Bugg w/Girlband live at The Marble Factory, Bristol

The Marble Factory, 16th August

Girlband

Formed in Nottingham in April 2022, this talented trio consisting of Georgie on vocals and guitar, Kay on bass, and Jada on drums has been making a name for themselves in the Midlands. With a monthly residency at MIMM (which immediately sold out), they have been gaining popularity in the local music scene.

The moment the first chords resonated through the venue, a sizable crowd made their way in from the external bars, indicating the excitement and anticipation in the air.

What struck me immediately was the band’s heavier sound, which exceeded my expectations. Infused with a healthy dose of ’80s vibes, their music had a captivating energy that kept me engaged throughout the show. Interestingly, while they draw inspiration from more modern influences like Wet Leg & Lost Bitchos, there were moments when hazy shades of winter (The Bangles) came to mind, adding a nostalgic touch to their performance.

One aspect that particularly impressed me was the band’s dynamic on stage. Georgie, the lead vocalist, showcased her exquisite talent when taking the front, commanding attention with her powerful voice. However, what truly stood out was the way she graciously stepped aside, allowing Kay to deliver blistering basslines and Jada to shine with an impressive and energetic drum performance. Their synergy and willingness to share the spotlight demonstrated a level of unity and collaboration that was refreshing to witness.

The seven-song showcase they delivered captivated the crowd and generated a buzz of positive comments from those around me. Tracks such as “21st Century Suffragette,” “Talk Me Down,” and “Not Like The Rest” proved to be standout moments, providing a solid foundation for the band to build upon. This grassroots band has clearly struck a chord with their audience, leaving a lasting impression and creating a desire to see them perform in Brizzle town (Bristol) once again.

Overall, it was an evening filled with impressive musical talent, a vibrant atmosphere, and the promise of a bright future for this rising band.

JAKE BUGG

Jake Bugg, since his emergence in 2012, has embodied the essence of an English Britpop star. Even in 2023, his cheeky grin and working-class swagger remain intact, solidifying his status as one of the most accomplished performers of the past decade.

The Marble Factory, where the event took place, is a venue designed for nights like these. It was a bustling, sweaty mass of concertgoers, with outstretched arms and voices strained from enthusiastic sing-alongs. The venue has always been a favorite among attendees, thanks to its helpful staff, straightforward layout, and easy navigation. What sets it apart is the multitude of vantage points that offer excellent views of the stage, making it a breeze for everyone to enjoy the performances.

The gig itself was an experience saturated with pure fandom. Jake Bugg energetically showcased his repertoire of indie classics, including crowd favorites like “Lightning Bolt,” “Two Fingers,” and “Seen it all.” The enthusiastic approval from the audience was palpable, only momentarily subdued during poignant moments that sent shivers down the spine, such as his stunning rendition of “Broken.”

What sets Jake Bugg apart is his seemingly effortless talent. He belongs to that select group of individuals who make their craft look so easy. Watching him perform, the audience was inspired to sing their hearts out, momentarily forgetting that such talent is not universally found. However, this realization didn’t deter them from enjoying themselves, as they danced and sang along with infectious enthusiasm. Unlike some performers who rely on flashy costumes, elaborate staging, or dazzling lighting, Bugg is comfortable in his own skin and keeps it simple. Armed with just his guitar and raw talent, he proves that sometimes all you need for a memorable gig is the perfect combination of man, guitar, and quality music. The fact that Jake Bugg’s performance held the crowd’s attention for a full 90-minute set speaks volumes about his ability to captivate an audience.

As the night drew to a close, Jake Bugg concluded his set with “All I Need,” a modern classic and a personal favorite among attendees. The Marble Factory transformed into a sea of swaying limbs and radiant smiles, encapsulating the feel-good atmosphere that defined the evening. It was a night that left concertgoers elated, thanks to the uplifting performance of a star who knows how to deliver a memorable experience.
