Review – Gang of Youths

Bristol Trinity Centre – 30th November 2021

Gang of Youths returned to Bristol for the first time in three years for a sold out crowd at Trinity Centre.

There was a massive sense of euphoria and community at the gig – this was the final show for Gang of Youths this year and, as frontman David Le’aupepe said during the gig, who knows when we’ll actually be able to see them again with the way things currently are.

Whilst they are scheduled to play the o2 next year both the band and the audience treated this as a massive celebration before potential lockdowns, with an overwhelming sense of euphoria and community from both the band and the audience.

The gig had to be stopped a few times as Le’aupepe made sure everyone felt safe in the sold-out crowd.

Gang of Youths have always tried to find positivity from difficult circumstances in their music and this was showcased in their live performance. The set was relatively brief with three tracks from Gang Of Youths long-awaited upcoming third album “angel in real time” getting previewed here, including recent single “tend the garden” being dedicated to Le’aupepe’s father who sadly passed away a few years ago.

Their second album “Go Father In Lightness” really put them on the map and most of the set was taken up with tracks from this album. However, every single song of the setlist was met with rapturous applause, with the crowd singing along to every single word including “Magnolia” from their first album “The Positions”.

The performance from the band was tight – it’s clear that they’ve honed their craft and are ready for even bigger stages and it will be exciting to  continue to watch their trajectory over the next few years.
