I have an interesting history with Biffy Clyro that goes all the way back to Sonisphere Festival 2011.Buzzing to see them we retired to the tent a few hours before their set so we could be fresh for their performance…Yes, you guessed it.. we all fell asleep back at the campsite, only to wake as the crowd erupted into applause right at the very end … devastated was not the word. I can’t print the words that were.
Fear not, a second opportunity arose at Download in 2017, Biffy were expectedly awesome, but standing on that muddy hill wasn’t enough. I wanted to be closer. I thought the moment had arrived in 2020, but Covid soon put pay to that idea, but on Thursday the moment finally arrived.
Amongst a bustling sell out crowd in Bristol, for the final night of the aptly named “fingers crossed” tour. & what a moment it was as Biffy waltzed through a astonishing 23 song set splayed over more than 90 minutes. You get your money’s worth & then some with Biffy, always have, always will.
From first note to last the crowd were with them, the connection of this band, those songs, with their fans is something to behold. At stages the band could have downed guitars & mics & the crowd would have performed the set for them. Loud, emotional & a room full of tears of joy & smiles of pure happiness.
The set focusing heavily on surprise new album “The myth of the happily ever after”, which only dropped a couple of weeks ago. The crowd already having taken the new material to their hearts were happy to sing the lyrics back at the band. A record that feels very much like a documentation of a specific moment in time.
The all time classics of “bubbles” & “many of honour” taking us into a two song encore where I wondered if the crowd would leave afterwards or simply stay & carry on singing. It’s impossible to convey in writing the deep affection people have for this band. Their music quite obviously poignant reminders of very heart felt moments in the memories of those that were there too watch.
