The Exchange, November 2nd 2022
Melbourne’s power pop group Romero will be heading to the UK next month for the first time ever.
The run includes festival appearances at Pitchfork London, Pitchfork Paris, London Calling, and Mutations Festival, slots with Bodega, LIFE and The Bug Club, plus headline shows in Brussels, Leeds, Glasgow, Edinburgh, and Birmingham.
An exhilarating burst of first class power-pop, their debut album Turn It On! came out earlier this year and is a memorable party, steeped in twist-like dancing, deep and meaningful chats with strangers, air-shredding in the middle of the dancefloor, lover’s tiffs and wrong decisions culminating in a prophetic realisation that these indeed are ‘the days’. Alanna Oliver guides her soulful verses through shimmering, unforgettable riffs that master the sonics of heavy-hearted classics of the CBGBs era punk, glam and pop.

Having hastily sold out multiple pressings of their debut double-A side Honey / Neapolitan in 2019, Romero was identified as one to watch in the underbelly circles of mail-order punk. Released in April via Cool Death Records and Feel It Records, the quintets debut album Turn It On! has received universal praise from outlets such as NME, KEXP, Pitchfork, The FADER, Sterogum, The Quietus, a nod from Henry Rollins and many others. On release week the album held a top ten place on the Australian ARIA vinyl charts, as well as the NACC Radio charts. Within the last two months the band has performed with Parquet Courts, King Stingray, CHAI, Middle Kids and Gang of Youths. Romero’s debut stands alongside cherished modern classics by Low Life, Tyrannamen, Sweeping Promises and POWER.
