NUHA RUBY RA
ANNOUNCES NEW EP MACHINE LIKE ME OUT MARCH 3RD ON BRACE YOURSELF RECORDS
SHARES NEW SINGLE SELF PORTRAITURE
“The dense, echoey Birthday Party-esque melange of post-punk instrumentation and Ra’s untouchably aloof vocals make for an irresistibly alluring combination” – NME “The coolest Motherfucker on the planet” – So Young “Mysterious And Enchanting” – DIY “The East London artist channels Ian Dury’s prowling allure” – The Guardian “Nuha Ruby Ra is set to begin her trailblazing quest of what may be her breakout year – dismiss her at your peril.” – Clash “I absolutely love this” – Lauren Laverne “Already compared to the likes of Björk and Skunk Anansie, the London-based artist finds herself in opposition to many things in How To Move – convention, sensuality, misery, vexation – and transforms it all right in front of us” – The Quietus “Absolutely incredible…A full sonic and visual experience” – Jess Iszatt – BBC Introducing Nuha Ruby Ra today announces a new EP Machine Like Me set for release March 3rd on Brace YourselfRecords. She also today shares new single Self Portraiture and a string of UK dates (see below). Last year’s How To Move EP, released to critical acclaim cemented Nuha as one of the most exciting and provocative new acts in the country. Live shows across UK and Europe followed – both as headliner and supporting the likes of Yard Act, Warmduscher, King Gizzard And The Lizard Wizard and Viagra Boys – and in 2022 her debut at SXSW in Austin, Texas. She’s also booked prestigious slots on home turf at the likes of Glastonbury and Bluedot, as well as European showcases at Left Of The Dial, Reeperbahn, Grauzone and more. Press support has been abundant and there has been key support at BBC 6Music with Steve Lamacq, Lauren Laverne & Iggy Pop allchampioning. Jack Saunders at BBC Radio 1 has been another big supporter as has Jess Iszatt at BBC Introducing. On the single, Nuha Ruby Ra says,“Self Portraiture is a raw portrait of myself right now, think of it like a painting. I think the song is lyrically revealing, to give anymore away would be to limit the imagination of the receiver. Don’t be fooled by the beginning, the middle, or the end.” Watch the self-produced video for Self Portraiture here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=n27fAUG7Bok“The most important thing to me is that I do exactly what I want,” says Nuha Ruby Ra. “Not in a stubborn way, but in the way I need as a person.” On her colossally ambitious new EP Machine Like Me, that drive is plain to hear. She played almost every instrument herself, holed up in a small Essex cabin, followed by a couple of weeks at PRAH Studios: from the dirty bass drones of My Voice to Self-Portraiture’s squalling battles between synth and guitar, the lurching punk stomp of 6 In The Morning to the teeming electronics of Slicer, the manic industrial noise of Rise to You Never Know’s sudden strip back into moody ambience. It’s only flourishes of saxophone and trumpet from Terry Edwards and a layer of orchestral guitar from James Howard for which she enlisted extra musicians. She also co-produced the EP with Ben Hillier (who also mixed it) and Simon Milner. She designs all of her own merchandise too, from T-shirts and totes to one-off bespoke art pieces. Though the sheer amount of talent she displays might suggest she’s the privileged beneficiary of professional training, that couldn’t be further from the truth. “I come from a place where I’ve taught myself to do everything,” Ra says firmly. When she first set out playing in punk bands “I was often belittled for my contributions, whether for being a girl or not playing instruments in a traditional way,” she recalls. “It was a fight for many years. I’m not saying I’m right and anyone’s wrong, but this is how I wanna do it!” Machine Like Me an expression, quite simply, of where she’s at as an artist right now. “I think at some point I realised that music is the most potent form of art,” she says. “It stays with people, it brings back memories, it becomes like a fabric of someone’s being. I want to give things to people that they can keep, and to share with them in a way that can maybe shape their world too.”EP Pre-Save: https://ffm.to/machinelikeme Website // Facebook // Instagram // Twitter // TiktokNuha Ruby Ra – Machine Like Me – March 3rd – Brace Yourself Records |
