Edinburgh-based, experimental five-piece Redolent have today shared their anticipated debut EP ‘make big money fast online now’ via Columbia Records. Their 5-tracker arrives alongside new single and video ‘Death In The Family’ confidently placing Redolent as one of 2023’s most promising new bands.
Fronted by brothers Danny and Robin Herbert, alongside drummer Andrew Turnbull, bassist Robbie White and Alice Hancock on live samplers, ‘make big money fast online now’ doubles down on Redolent’s perfect hybrid of electronic and indie. A suite of deep spacious synths, stretched across ambient loops and alt-pop production lays the architecture for frontman Robin’s distinctly evocative vocal and idiosyncratic lyrics.
Created over a three-month period from Post Electric Studios in Leith, Redolent are the EP’s sole creators; writing, recording, producing and mixing the EP independently. Born out of an experiment to see how quickly they could start and complete a project, the challenge both exacted their focus and legitimised their creative process.
“We set out to make something really quickly, as an exercise, to see what would happen with more chaos, if we were less precious and obsessive about the writing process” describes Robin. “We tried to be honest about some difficult times with the lyrics, whilst keeping the vibe positive overall, which turned out to be quite tricky. Production wise, we wanted it to go poppier than we had before, but also keep a bit of grit. Hope we got there in the end. It’ll be cool to see how people react to hearing it from start to finish. It feels like the start of a good time.”
EP opener and title track ‘make big money fast online now’ does much of the work to cement Redolent’s brilliance. Grappling with pursuing a career in music in a world that feels fundamentally designed against that dream, its release was ironically the catalyst for their signing to Columbia Records. Recent highlights ‘Space Cadet’ and ‘Extreme Mood Swings’ see the band bring generational anxieties to the forefront over brisk drumbeats and their distinctive production.
New single ‘Death In The Family’ explores grief through the metaphorical use of the grey gloom of Scottish weather across poppy soundscapes influenced by Mount Kimbie and Animal Collective. The single also arrives alongside their self-directed video depicting a suitably light-hearted take on a dark narrative, in the way only Redolent can do.

‘make big money fast online now’ stamps Redolent’s sound while sitting at the intersection of some of their musical influences Mount Kimble, king krule, brockhampton, LCD Soundsystem, Madvillain, Tom Vek, Clairo, CAN, Talking Heads yet, still hues more closely to their contemporaries than their influences. It’s a sound that has seen Redolent already gain praise from titles including NME, Clash, The Line of Best Fit, DIY, Hunger, The Skinny and more, alongside being named in this year’s NME100.
Coinciding with the release of their debut EP ‘make big money fast online now’ and proving they are a festival-ready ensemble, Redolent will be hosting an EP launch event at The Biscuit Factory, Edinburgh on 3rd February before embarking on a series of soon-to-be-announced live dates, alongside an already confirmed appearance at this year’s The Great Escape in Brighton. Stay tuned for lots more from Redolent in 2023.
