The Lanes, 22nd March
The Lanes was packed on Wednesday night with an eclectic crowd for the first night of the PENGSHUi tour following the releases of their latest album, ‘Destroy Yourself’ and the new ‘EPii’.
The trio hailing from London, comprised of Illaman (vocals), Fatty (bass) and Pravy Prav (drums), bring a style that amalgamates punk and grime, infused with a heavy base and punchy lyricism that will get any room moving.
From the get-go, that is what they did, engulfing the small space with a wall of noise and positive energy.
Midway through the set, the band dropped into a cover of Prodigy’s ‘Light Up The Sky’, and as this finished, Illaman announced they were asked to remix another track but had never had the chance to release it or play it live following Keith Flint’s death. The band started playing, and the familiar sample of Omen started coming through the PA before the room erupted into absolute chaos. Watching from the back, everyone was swirling and bouncing as the band took great pleasure in showing us why Prodigy would have chosen them.
Unapologetic, authentic, genuine. PENGSHUi perform with such passion and drive that it is easy to fall in love with and get lost in their messages about politics, mental state, and the world around us. Even with such heavy topics, they play with a vulnerability felt throughout their gig. Musically and lyrically, these guys are a treat for the ears. I highly recommend you keep them on your radar.

First attended gig: One of the first gigs I ever went to on my own was Chase & Status in 2008. My mates and I covered ourselves in glow paint, only to sweat it off jumping and dancing. It was the start of my never-ending gig list.
First gig shot: Technically the first band I ever shot would have been my dad’s, at the age of 9! My mum gave me this giant tape camcorder and I filmed the entire thing. Since then, I’ve shot plenty of friends’ bands whilst co-managing the live music venue, Le Pub in Newport, and I haven’t stopped since.
Dream gig: CASisDEAD, Slow Club, Enter Shikari, Dizzee Rascal (in the Boy In The Corner era), Turnstile, and The Prodigy.
