ANNOUNCE DEBUT EP, EP1, ARRIVING 7TH APRIL – SHARE NEW SINGLE ‘THIS IDLE MOTION
Today LUNGE have announced their new EP, EP1, and shared a tantalising new single ‘This Idle Motion‘. LUNGE are the husband-and-wife duo of Archie Bronson Outfit founder Arp and Joe Gideon & The Shark‘s Viva, who together embody the raw spirit of their musical pasts while also ripping up their previous aesthetic rule-book, weaving open-hearted lyricism and classic songcraft to an outward-looking and melodic sonic template that keenly fuses both analogue and modern production techniques. ‘This Idle Motion’ was mixed by Dan Carey and the accompanying video was directed by Simon Owens whose credits include Hot Chip, Alexis Taylor, Caribou and more. It follows their previous single ‘Off With Their Heads‘, which drew a huge amount of support from BBC 6 Music’s Marc Riley who had the band live in session a few weeks ago (revisit here). Arp says of the track: “Taking a lyrical dip in the eternal river of love; the great river will rock you in her ebb and flow, as you explore a simultaneous freedom and claustrophobia. I wrote them quick-flash one night in bed and in the morning laid them on the piano for Viva to write to and it was complete that day; one of those occasional, golden, easy-birth songs. The man-myth that is Dan Carey mixed this instinctively and with love.” Viva says of the video: “We were already fans of Simon’s previous video work, so when he got in touch out of the blue it felt rather fatalistic and exciting ! I loved working with Simon and trusting his concept for the video and being given the freedom to lose myself in our choreography. On the shoot I was blinded by a spotlight so bright I felt totally alone, yet protected by his vision. I just want to do it all again ! “ Director Simon Owens says: “Lunge appeared all silvery, reflective and urgent through my left kneecap. I looked down, bent my knee and heard golden pop coming through the radio. It struck me the lead singer Viva could have two personalities in song form, dark and light, or light and shadow. If you watch Viva carefully when looking up to the sky she can actually see GLASS-z12 galaxy, us mere mortals could only see an old man precariously stood on a narrow piece of wood clutching a light. This is the key difference between performer and watcher, galaxies and light, and why just a single watch of This Idle Motion video can take you into the pillars of creation and the LUNGE nebula.” Other tracks on this eclectic debut EP include previous singles ‘Off With Their Heads‘–produced by Dean Horner of All Seeing I who’s also lent his production prowess to the likes of Pale Blue Eyes and Róisín Murphy–and ‘Heavy Golden Swim‘, a dance-punk energy shawled in a classic Brill Building-inspired melody, which was produced by Tim Goldsworthy (DFA, Massive Attack) and mixed by Shuta Shinoda (Spiritualized, Hot Chip). Other creative personnel recruited by the duo includeSlowdive’s Neil Halstead, the rich baritone croon of The Golden Dregs and Sam Windett of Archie Bronson Outfit. Revelling in their DIY freedom and unshackled by a lack of technical nous, the pair injected their newly Cornish home studio with their very own brand of (coastal) lovers rock.LUNGE – EP1 // 7th April, 2023 |
