Bristol Sounds, 24th June 2022
In typical British summertime style, the masses came in flocks to see an outdoor summer show despite the rain and wind – this time, to see Elbow take the stage at the Harbourside before their Glastonbury set on Sunday night. The Bristolian weather may not have been on top form, however, the night was enjoyed by families and friends alike, and by the time the band took to the stage, blue skies were breaking through the clouds.
The Mancunian rock band released their ninth studio album “Flying Dream 1” last November after writing it remotely during the COVID-19 pandemic, and performed the closing track “What Am I Without You”.
Frontman Guy Garvey addressed the crowd often during their set, professing their excitement to be back performing in the city after not seeing us “for two albums”.
As one of the UK’s most critically acclaimed bands, Elbow did not hesitate to capture the attention of the audience, which varied across age, gender and race – an ode to the band’s irrevocable relatability within their music. The voices of the crowd echoed all night long around the amphitheatre to their numerous hits, such as “Magnificent (She Says)” and “Ground For Divorce”.
Elbow’s discography has had an unmistakable impact on British music. And years since the release of multi-award-winning “One Day Like This”, it still evokes a communal euphoric emotion across audiences, which can aid its consideration as one of the best tracks of this century, as well as one of the best show closers. A beautiful night filled with music, laughter and love across the venue. As loved ones put their arms around each other and swayed to the cinematic melodies, this Friday night brought strangers in an audience closer together, having collectively experienced a magical summer performance from the quartet.
