Review – Softcult

The Crofters Rights, May 11th 2022

Softcult are as much a force for change as they are a band.

Canadian twins Phoenix & Mercedes take the stage at a packed Crofters rights with a message ready to be screamed in our faces. A message about exactly what any of us should put up with & tolerate before we say NO MORE.

And it’s a message born of the bitter experience of a music industry that tried its best to chew them up & spit them out, but the North American’s were never going to be victims.

Their inner strength is conveyed perfectly through their music. And it’s a political, social message that aims to make you think & make a positive change.

Performance wise we are treated to a 12 song set. With the duo showing harmonies to die for and a chemistry that was infectious. There is also a lovely touch of modesty & humility as they say how grateful they are to play a packed room. As being their first time in the UK they weren’t sure if anyone would be there. Songs such as “Another Bish”, “Spit it out” & “Take it Off” set this band apart from their peers. While the message behind encore track “BWBB” (boys will be boys) resonates hard in todays climate.

Excellent gig from an excellent band.
