Review – Lucia and The Best Boys

Bristol O2 Academy – March 8th 2022

So we normally incorporate support into the main review , but come on…How could you possibly ever describe Lucia & the boys as a “support act”
The Glaswegian Alt Rock / dark pop ensemble are in normal circumstances a  worthy headline act in their own right.
5 years in, 4 EPs locked down and streams numbering in the millions.

However, as a perfect accompaniment musically for Wolf Alice it sees them open to a sold out Bristol O2 Academy.

When you can book end your set with two singles that have been streamed in excess of 3.5 million times it says a lot about the esteem you’re held in as a band.As soon as the first strains of 2018s “Summertime” hit you realise how unassumingly familiar you are with the humble five piece.Finishing up with latest single (and former tune of the week from Radio One’s Jack Saunders) “Perfectly Untrue” cements that feeling of a band you know well, without necessarily knowing you know them well…. That makes sense right?

The five songs in the middle only go to show how much this band has grown over time. The artistic leadership of Lucia Fairfull, at home in fashion as much as in music, really shines through. With an atmospheric, emotionally raw brand of dark pop there seems to be a genuine connection with the crowd.
And the synergy they lay down before Wolf Alice hit the stage to headline was totally spot on. The right band, with the right energy, playing the right style for the evening.

The catalogue and quality of music LATBB have already produced would happily see me part with my cash to catch them as the main act the next time they pass through the city.
