Bristol O2 Academy, 8th March 2022
From playing their first gig back in 2010 as an acoustic duo from London, to winning the Brit award this year for Best British Group, Wolf Alice gave us the alternative rock show of our dreams. After selling out the Bristol 02 twice in the space of 2 weeks, their moody captivating chaos had us by our emotions here in Bristol this week.
Starting their set with high energy banger ‘Smile’ from their newest album Blue Weekend definitely got everyone’s eyes glowing. That catchy riff is honestly always stuck in my head.
Front person Ellie’s unapologetic nature is what draws me to this band the most. A particular lyric from Smile comes to mind ‘I am what I am and I’m good at it. And you don’t like me, well that isn’t fucking relevant’ This badass vibe really set the tone for the first high energy songs at the top of the setlist.
Next, we were blessed with the timeless (and slightly heavier) track from their second album Visions of a Life – Formidable Cool. But then, slowing things down slightly with the dreamy parring of Delicious Things, flowing into Lipstick on the Glass – both from the newest album. Ellie’s haunting vocals really had us all mesmerised.
A particular highlight of mine was hearing Play the Greatest Hits (also from the new album, maybe I am biassed as this is one of my favourite albums of 2021) There was something about experiencing this live, with those fuzzed guitars by Joff Oddie it really puts them on the heavier side of alternative rock with this one. There was also an added echo to the vocals, and they completely dominated that room.Taking a break from the heavier tracks, Ellie took a step back to perch on the drum platform to pour her passion into the emotional masterpiece that was No Hard Feelings. It was beautiful.
To round off this gorgeous set, they came back for a 2 song encore in which they played the deeply moving track Last Man on the Earth and crowd favourite to tie off the night Don’t Delete the Kisses. Wolf Alice are really at the top of their game right now. The future looks incredible for them.
