The Crofters Rights, December 16th
Overpass started the year as Birmingham’s best kept secret, but they arrived in Bristol with a burgeoning national reputation as one of the UK’s hottest indie acts in years.
I arrived as late as possible due to the current situation with Covid, but still in time to catch Bristol favourites @enterredband’s opening set. Big crowd/small crowd… big venue/small venue Enter Red fill a room with their sound. Songs of the purest quality that enable ER to stand above many of their peers.
Overpass took to the stage in such quiet, unassuming fashion I’d barely noticed they’d arrived. That didn’t last long as they set about showcasing just why they are so highly thought of.
The band opened up with Spotify favourite “Stop the clock” and by the time “Cocoon” & “One night lover” were done I could easily see the radio friendly appeal. This is a band that lends itself very easily to in car tunes on long summer road trips.
The influences of The Artic Monkeys & Joy Division were clear to hear. In both sound arrangement & vocal performance. Indeed Max, Indie, Joe & Elliot’s energetic cover of Joy Divisions “Love will tear us apart” was one of the best I’ve heard.
This also represented a change in gear for the fresh faced five piece as they upped the tempo into our favourite track “Changes” (which is now in my iTunes collection) & Fugitive. The set was brought to a close with “Otherside of midnight”.
And a conclusion that the UK might just have a challenger for the 2022 Indie Rock crown.
